History of Beef Pizza – Lahmacun

Lahmacun or as we call it Beef Pizza can be found all over the middle east. Traditionally it a flatbread with a meat, vegetables, and spices topping. In the United States it is most probably topped with a Halal Beef, most other places use minced lamb or a beef lamb mixture. Common vegetables are onions tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, garlic, pickles. Paprika, Cinnamon, cumin, and black pepper are traditional spices. Due to its appearance it is often called Turkish, Armenian, or Lebanese pizza. We prefer to call it Beef Pizza to give it a clear name without trying to trace back its origins. The round flatbread is oven baked and has a very thin crust similar to a Naan bread. The origin is stated be to back to the 6th century BC Persian’s who ate the bread with cheese and dates. In arabic the name is Lahm bi ajin which means meat with dough.
